Saturday, July 25, 7pm: Rob Halpern & Jen Scappettone

Common Place is Rob Halpern’s most recent book of poetry (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2015). He lives between San Francisco and Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Jennifer Scappettone is the author of From Dame Quickly, Killing the Moonlight: Modernism in Venice, and several chapbooks. Exit 43, an archaeology of the Superfundament and opera of pop-up pastorals, is in progress for Atelos Press, with a letterpress palimpsest, A Chorus Fosse, coming soon from Compline. She edited and translated Locomotrix: Selected Poetry and Prose of Amelia Rosselli, and is at work on translating a 1944 F.T. Marinetti “aeronovel or aeropoem”; she just launched PennSound Italiana, a new sector of the archive devoted to Italian poetry that she curates. Collaborative work includes performances of Exit 43 with the Difforme Ensemble; digital archaeologies with Judd Morrissey; libretti, scores, and vocal concepts for PARK, directed and choreographed by Kathy Westwater; and sonic documentaries for X Locus, with AGENCY architecture and composer Paul Rudy at the American Academy in Rome. Her most recent work is Leave Loom, a garbage documentary room woven at WUHO Gallery in Hollywood. She lives in Chicago and sometimes elsewhere, including here.

Thursday, July 23, 7pm: Jasper Bernes

The Public School and Poetic Research Bureau close the circle to present Jasper Bernes and his new book We Are Nothing and So Can You this Thursday night at 7pm at 951 Chung King Rd.

Jasper Bernes is the author of a previous collection of poems, Starsdown (2007), and is currently completing a book of literary history, The Work of Art in the Age of Deindustrialization, about the role of poetry in the postindustrial restructuring of labor. Excerpts from We Are Nothing and So Can You have appeared in Lana Turner, The American Reader, The Capilano Review, Hi Zero, Prelude, and elsewhere. His writing on contemporary politics and political economy can be found in venues such as The New Inquiry, LARB, Endnotes, and Viewpoint. He lives in Berkeley with his family and teaches in the English Departments at UC Berkeley and Stanford University.
 

STEP & REPEAT: Friday-Sunday nights, July 17-19 @ Geffen Contemporary

 

 
For the second year, the Poetic Research Bureau has partnered with MOCA on the literary component of Step & Repeat, MOCA's annual festival of live performance. The festival spans three nights, with poetry and performance beginning at 6pm each night.

Friday night (July 17) features Mashinka Firunts & Danny Snelson from Philadelphia, Raquel Gutierrez & Adam Garcia from SF/LA, and Harryette Mullen from Los Angeles.

Saturday night (July 18) brings out Nathaniel Mackey from North Carolina and Maged Zaher down from Seattle.

Sunday night (July 19) concludes with a visit from New York experimental literary collective TROLL THREAD, with Holly Melgard, Joey Yearous-Algozin and Chris Sylvester.

Lindsey Boldt is a poet and performer living in Oakland, CA.
